While Switzerland is consistently preparing for a climate-neutral energy future one supply system is becoming increasingly important: District heating.
It is already part of everyday life in many cities and municipalities - but its full potential is far from exhausted.
What exactly makes district heating so attractive - especially in a technically demanding, decentralized country like Switzerland?

What is district heating?
District heating is a system for centralized heat generation and distribution: heat is generated in a central station (e.g. a heating plant).e.g. wood heating, waste incineration, biogas plant) is generated, transported to the connected buildings via insulated pipes and used there for heating and hot water.
The big advantage: production is outsourced, which means there is no need for the end customer:
the maintenance of a boiler,
the storage of fuels,
and usually also the chimney.

District heating networks are designed and monitored redundantly - often with leak monitoring systems, central control and buffer capacities. They offer an extremely stable supply, even in winter or during peak loads.

The price models are often more transparent and less volatile than with fossil fuels. In addition, long-term tariff models with a clear calculation basis apply - particularly attractive for builders and owners.

Once installed, a heating network can be expanded - new buildings, additional energy sources and even cooling supplies can be connected at a later date. District heating grows with you.
Switzerland: An ideal location for district heating
Many regions already have a high density of waste heat - e.g. from waste incineration plants, industry and wastewater.
The proportion of renewable heat production is rising continuously - supported by subsidy programs such as ProKilowatt, cantonal energy plans and investment aid.
Cities such as Zurich, Basel, Bern and Lucerne are focusing on expanding and densifying existing district heating networks.
